JAMMING by Rimantas Pleikys

REEL TO REEL

Regarding the music: the Polish Polka tapes used to play 45 minutes each (possibly, 15 ips, = 38.1 cm/sec, 1000 m). A longer 135 minute tape was used on one occassion (possibly, 7½ ips, = 19.05 cm/sec, 1500 m). Musical jamming made use mostly of instrumental pop music. Operational tracks were compiled by rearranging the same pieces in a different queue. Once, in 1973, a tape featuring The Beatles and T-Rex predominated. Some of the Polish Polka pieces were on the lists of some Warsaw and Vilnius State radio music shows. Two or three tape decks were connected to each jamming transmitter and controlled manually. On some occasions the tape was played by mistake in reverse mode. The tapes were played until completely worn.
